What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making a brand the source that AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude select and cite when they answer a buyer's question. It has four parts: publishing claims specific enough to be quoted, resolving the brand as one consistent entity across the web, being present in the third-party sources engines retrieve from, and measuring the result as share of citation rather than keyword rankings.

Why AEO matters now

Traditional search returned ten links and let the reader choose. An answer engine returns one synthesised answer and chooses its sources for the reader. Visibility therefore stops being a question of position on a page and becomes a question of selection: was your claim the one the model lifted, and were you the entity it attributed it to.

Engines make that selection from a corpus far wider than your website. For a comparative or recommendation prompt they retrieve from review platforms, community threads, industry publications and directories first. A brand that only optimises its own domain is competing for a share of the answer it can rarely win alone.

What AEO involves

Quotable claims

A named methodology, original data, a definition that resolves an ambiguity. Engines quote sentences that carry information, not sentences that describe a company.

Entity consistency

The same name, description, founder and links on your site, LinkedIn, review sites and directories, connected with Organization schema and sameAs, so a model resolves every mention to one entity.

Presence in retrieval sources

Reviews, community answers, partner pages, listings and expert commentary in the third-party sources each engine actually cites for your buyers' prompts.

Share-of-citation measurement

A fixed set of buyer prompts, run across each engine on a schedule, with every cited source recorded. The share of those citations that are yours is the metric.

Tradeoffs

Advantages

  • Citations compound: a source that is quoted once is more likely to be retrieved again
  • Less dependence on paid placement and on marketplaces or aggregators
  • The work, well-structured pages and a consistent entity, also helps conventional search

Considerations

  • Requires original, specific content; generic pages do not get quoted
  • Results are measured differently, so reporting has to change with the work
  • Engine behaviour changes often, which is why measurement is continuous
  • Complements SEO rather than replacing it

Frequently asked questions

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes a page to rank in a list of links. AEO optimizes a brand to be selected and cited as the source inside a generated answer. Rankings are a page-level outcome; citations are a claim-level and entity-level outcome.

Which platforms does AEO target?

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and the AI shopping and travel assistants built on them.

Do I still need SEO if I invest in AEO?

Yes. Indexed, crawlable content and domain authority feed answer engines. AEO adds what SEO does not produce on its own: quotable claims, a consistent entity, presence in third-party sources, and measurement by citation.

Is structured data enough for AEO?

No. JSON-LD, clean HTML and llms.txt make a page eligible to be read. They do not make it the source an engine chooses to quote. Eligibility is table stakes; selection is the work.
